The benefits of gardening at any age

In this gardening feature, IRT Maintenance Gardener Brian Wardhaugh talks about enjoying gardening at any age or life stage.

“I love the way residents have created pockets of individual brilliance within the framework of an existing landscape, and the continuing passion and knowledge they bring to their community.”

I have always believed in the healing power of the natural world and the well-designed built environment.

Having ownership (or should I say custodianship) of land that has been maintained as a garden or lawn doesn't have to end with getting older or moving into a retirement community.

Many IRT communities come with an established garden and residents are encouraged to look after them as little or as much as desired.

I have written before about the health benefits of gardening, and the joy that can be derived from simply being in a place of great beauty. I love the way residents have created pockets of individual brilliance within the framework of an existing landscape, and the continuing passion and knowledge they bring to their community.

For those in care it is just as important to provide quality surroundings, whether it be a view, a floral display or a freshly cut lawn.

Being able to enjoy the garden without having the responsibility of its maintenance is a privilege well earned for many after long years of raising families and looking after their own homes.

Gardens are dynamic and the opportunities are as limited as our imagination.

So whether you are newly retired, downsizing, in a retirement village or aged care centre, there are plenty of ways to be involved or to simply enjoy the garden.
