Frequently asked questions

For those studying in a classroom/virtual classroom environment :

  • 6-8 hours of home study plus classroom hours
  • pre-reading is essential before attending classes
  • additional 120 hours of work placement
  • 15-20 hours of self directed study per week

Like choosing any area of study the choice is a personal one for you to make. Aged Care is a rapidly expanding industry where demand for workers will increase as the Australian population increases. The knowledge and
skills required by an Aged Care worker are increasingly being respected by the population as a whole.

  • 6-8 month period (self- directed) – online, work placement
  • 6-8 month period (blended) – 14 face to face/virtual classes with two practical assessments and work placement
  • For face to face classes, these may be scheduled in Wollongong, Milton, Sydney and other IRT locations in NSW and ACT.

Yes, 120 hours of work placement is required in an aged care centre. IRT Academy will assist in organising work placement but can’t guarantee work placement in areas where IRT does not have an aged care centre.

You will be assessed in a number of ways. These methods may include:

  • Virtual and face-to-face classroom sessions
  • Group discussions
  • Practical activities and projects
  • Written questions and research exercises
  • Practical observations in a simulated environment and the workplace
  • Role-plays
