2022 UCI Road World Championships

Wollongong is the host city for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, an international road cycling event, from 17 to 25 September.

The Championships feature a number of races that will take place on the streets around the Wollongong CBD and surrounding suburbs across the week.

The event will see a number of road closures, establishment of special event clearways and changes to traffic conditions which may affect access to our operations during the week of the event, including some of our aged care centres and retirement villages, and homes of our home care customers.

IRT operations

Our aged care centres and retirement villages remain open, however our operations in the Illawarra may experience some minor disruptions as a result of limited access and restricted street parking during the Championships.

We are working with our staff to determine alternative routes of travel from their home (where necessary) and ensuring they allow extra travel time for their trip.

Our Home Care team has been in touch with customers affected by the event to reschedule services where IRT is unable to access streets.

IRT will continue to provide essential home care services (e.g. personal care, medication assistance, meal preparation), however non-essential services (e.g. domestic assistance, social support) and transport services have been cancelled for the week of the Championships.

Plan ahead

If you are visiting your loved one at an IRT aged care centre or retirement village during the week of the Championships, you are encouraged to become familiar with expected road closures and changed traffic conditions prior to your trip. You may need to consider an alternate route and allow extra travel time for your journey.

Some key points that may assist you when planning activities for the week include:

• Roads are open before and after event times and event times differ each day;
• There will be no street parking on roads used for the races;
• You may want to consider rescheduling any non-essential appointments to before or after the event period;
• If you need your car, can you park on a nearby street so you can access your vehicle during race times?

Access to our Illawarra aged care centres

Please note the route is a suggestion only and may not reflect the most efficient route on your day of travel.

For real-time traffic updates and road closures we recommend you visit the Live Traffic NSW website or download the Live Traffic NSW app.

Please note, Five Islands Road will be closed at the following times:

• Saturday 24 September – 12pm – 3.30pm
• Sunday 25 September – 9.45am – 12.45pm 

If you are travelling to to IRT Five Islands during these periods, you will need to use the Berkeley exist off the M1 Motorway to access the aged care centre via Warrawong.
